Track-bound public transport system

Miskolc

In 2013, the City of Miskolc commissioned the consortium, the lead partner of which was TRENECON (members to the consortium: Unitef ’83 Zrt., ROAD-TEST Ltd., Forrás Unió). To work out the long-term development concept for the city’s transport, and to prepare for the “flagship” projects to be implemented in the short term.

Development of urban and suburban track-bound public transport systems in the City of Miskolc and its agglomeration

Miskolc is the fourth most populous city in Hungary functioning as an administrative, trade, education and economic centre. In the urban and suburban transport service the main focus, in addition to slow down the expansion of individual transport, is on public transport and track-bound transport development in particular.

In 2013, the City of Miskolc commissioned the consortium, the lead partner of which was TRENECON (members to the consortium:  Unitef  ‘83  Zrt., ROAD-TEST Ltd.,  Forrás Unió).  To work out the long-term development concept for the city’s transport, and to prepare for the “flagship” projects to be implemented in the short term.  The study-level planning task was funded under the Transport Operational Programme (TOP) with EU co-financing.

The study justifying the transport development, the detailed assessment of the state-of-play covering all modes of transport identified the recently reducing share of public transport journeys as a critical problem. A main focus of the objectives in the development concept is to slow down and put an end to this process. In identifying the potential measures for the achievement of goalsin particular the development potentials for urban and suburban track-bound public transport were in our focus.

On the basis of the decision support concept, detailed feasibility studies have been carried out on the transport development project selected by the Client. TRENECON and its partners assessed the development of the intermodal hub at Kandó Kálmán square, the key transport hubs of Gömör railway  station  and  Felső Majláth in Miskolc and analysed the potentials of a north-south bound bus corridor and subsequently the conditions for the implementation of a north-south tram line. In the design studies we analysed  the  possibility and justification of the construction of the Tram-train connection between Miskolc and the between Miskolc Kazincbarcika to provide suburban transport service.

Among the transport planning tasks, TRENECON had the responsibility to organise and process traffic counting, tdesign the complex computer aided traffic model and to run the model test surveys.  Our engineering, economics and environmental experts evaluated the development options at conceptual and project level and then carried out the financial and economic cost-benefit analysis of the project.  Our design engineers have prepared a study plan for the north-south bound bus corridor and the plans of the tram-train system between Miskolc and Kazincbarcika.

Under the assignment TRENECON performed extensive project management  taskscoordinated the collaboration between the consortium  and  the project owner and also with the  transport  operators  (MÁVVolánMiskolc Transport Company) and other stakeholders of the development.
