Railway Operations and Traffic Planning

The first and fundamental task that lays the foundations of any railway infrastructure design exercise is planning the demand driven conceptual timetable and corresponding railway operations.

Timetable planning

Our work at TRENECON is supported by the VIRIATO software system developed for the Swiss rail network, and by the TAKT programme package. TAKT is tailored for the timetable planning particularities of the Hungarian rail network and applied by the Railway Path Allocation Ltd (VPE).

Traffic simulation

A computer simulation model is the most suitable tool for assessing the capacity of line and station infrastructure. The software is designed to render the realistic scenario of train runs on the track network and interlocking equipment. It is the most appropriate tool both for the permit designs and for planning the phases of implementation.

TRENECON uses the Swiss OpenTrack software system for computer aided traffic simulation. With this simulation system, trains can be tracked in real time and time-lapse, and the impacts of delays, failures and the “human factor effect” can also be assessed. At the same time, the simulations can be reproduced for comparison of different variants as well.

Assignments

Planning of the railway operations implies very similar tasks in the case of “heavy rail”, urban railway and combined systems  alike. We had a number of assignments including traffic surveys for urban trams, suburban railway (HÉV), tram-train, and light rail systems alike.

Our railway assignments were connected to the development of study plans, permit designs and detailed designs for the railway networks of MÁV, GYSEV and the Serbian Railways.

We have also been involved in the assessment of tram-train solutions for Miskolc and Szeged agglomerations.

Furthermore, we carried out traffic simulations for the tram and suburban railway (HÉV) lines under the assignment for the design of track-bound systems in Budapest.
